"PSU Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. With Two Events"

Author: Erin Malecha Arias, Office of Marketing and Communications, (503-725-8794)

Portland State University has two activities slated in January to highlight the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Monday, January 17, 2005.

Schedule of Events
Wednesday, January 12, 2005

7 p.m. An Evening with Juan Williams
Smith Memorial Student Union, 3rd Floor Ballroom, 1825 S.W. Broadway

Juan Williams, senior correspondent for National Public Radio, will speak at a community-wide event celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event also features the Woodlawn Elementary School dancers. Juan Williams will offer insights into the lessons learned from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A book signing will follow the talk; books can be purchased at the event. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $5 for students who present a valid student ID at the time of sale and can be purchased at Ticketmaster outlets or at the PSU Ticket Office (1825 S.W. Broadway, room 102). Seating is limited.

Monday, January 17, 2005, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In recognition of the 2005 anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, Portland State University faculty, staff, students and several of the university's long-term community partners will make it a day on instead of a day off by engaging in a variety of service projects. These projects are made possible through a generous grant from Best Buy and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Participants will volunteer for one of the following projects from 9 a.m. to noon.:

* Lewis Elementary School is developing an environmental education program. Volunteers will assist the School in breaking ground on a new organic farm, repairing a greenhouse and compost area, and creating an environmental art display.

* Cleveland High School seeks to connect with surrounding community residents. Participants will assist high school students in building community by distributing care packages to needy residents and creating a community garden.

* Volunteers will help SOLV restore the Johnson's Creek watershed by removing invasive plant species, planting native trees and shrubs, and creating fish habitats.

Project volunteers will meet for light refreshments at the Campus Ministry building (633 S.W. Montgomery) at 8 a.m. Volunteers are still needed. Contact Kyle Bray in the Center for Academic Excellence at 503-725-8132 or kbray@pdx.edu to sign-up for a project. Visit www.cae.pdx.edu for more information.

Hi all--

Come to the Peace Gathering and drum up some energy to send to the White House on Inauguration Day! At 9am PST George Bush will be raising his hand to take the oath of office. We can join other groups across the country in flooding the White House with positive energy at that time. Our intention: PEACE

The Peace Gathering is at Terry Schrunk Plaza, SW Third and Madison St., Thursday January 20, 2005. People will be dropping in at the Plaza all day. Speakers are scheduled from 11am to 1pm and 4:30pm to 6:30pm. There will be a petition available to sign asking Governor Kulongoski to recall Oregon's National Guard troops. If you can't drum at 9am, come anyway. If you don't have a drum, clap your hands. Let's drum some sense into the American government.

The Peace Gathering has a city permit, is non-partisan, and
NON-VIOLENT.

Buy some Stamps!
We need those of you who are great at forwarding info to your e-mail network. Please read this and pass it on. Peace and good health. It would be wonderful if 2003 were the year a cure for breast cancer was found!

This is one note I'll gladly pass on. The notion that we could raise $35 million by buying a book of stamps is powerful! As you may be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that kills and maims so many of our mothers, sisters, friends.

Instead of the normal $.37 for a stamp, this one costs $.45. The additional $.08 will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $7.40 and this is $9.00.

If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for this vital research. Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if the stamp outsold the lottery this week.
I urge you to do two things TODAY:
1. Go out and purchase some of these stamps.
2. E-mail your friends to do the same.

Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive. We can all afford the $ 1.60. Please help & pass it on!
