Peace by Piece
1(15 minute) program/2001/Oregon Peace Institute/ All/Grades 9-12

Demonstrates what teenagers find disturbing in the world and what positive actions teenagers take. Peace by Piece: Youth Take Action is a compilation of the stories of five young people, ranging in age from 13 to 22, what have all been affected by violence, racism, or stereotypes and have made decisions to take action to both change their lives and work to help others break the cycle of violence, conflict and racism.

For P.J. Mullen, it was seeing his best friend gunned down, relatives stabbed, or hauled off to jail. Rebecca Payne tired of the racist taunts her Athabascan and Cherokee heritage attached. Rudy Navarro made his move when he was discarded to a special education class due to his problems with English. These young people are the faces of teen taking action - against gangs, drugs, violence and racism.

Now instead of following in the footsteps of the violence and racism they grew up with, the young people portrayed in the video are combating the effects of our violent society.

  • We see P.J. counseling a teen charged with a violent offense and training him how to deal with conflict constructively.
  • Rebecca dances to native drums at a high school and shares her culture with her peers, effectively de-bunking the stereotypes.
  • Danielle Shimotakahara advocates for the removal of violent video games from public arcades.
  • Erika Poole mediates a vicious argument between two friends at school.
  • Rudy Navarro encourages Hispanic youth to stay out of gangs, off drugs, and in school through a Friday night soccer program.
  • And Felipe and Pe blast us with their spoken word poems.
